RUNNING IN

Most bikes come with a set of guidelines that tell you specifically how to run the bike in. Generally allowing the bike to warm up before use, keeping the rev's low and using the gear box rather than labouring the bike are all advised.

Most chain driven bikes will adjustment in the first few hundred miles and will need cleaning and lubricating are regular intervals particularly in winter.

Most bikes will require the first service within 300-500 miles or 3-6 months, this varies across bike and manufacturers and can void the warranty if not completed. The first service is not free so you should factor this cost in when purchasing your bike, it can cost between £100-£200 depending on the bike and often can be done at your local dealer while you wait.

SERVICING

50cc and 125cc bikes are now very reliable if properly maintained. Each manufacturer will have it's own dealer network capable of servicing your machine, check out their dealer locator to find your closest service center.

The service schedule of a bike is make and model specific so always check to ensure you do not invalidate your warranty. A typical service schedule would be:

  • 500 Mile (First service) or 3 months

  • 3000 Miles or 6 months

  • 6000 Miles or 6 Months

  • 9000 Miles or 6 Months

  • Etc

The price of a service varies depending on the age and mileage, typically a basic or annual service would be between £100-£200 and a full service with valve clearance checks £150-£250.

Servicing is vital to maintain the reliability of your bike and to maintain the manufacturer's warranty.

WARRANTY

Your motorcycle will come with a manufacturers warranty from new. Generally 50cc bikes come with 12 months parts/labour and 125cc bikes with 24 months respectively.

Most manufacturers cover all mechanical parts, electrical parts but not consumables such as tyres, brakes, chain and so on. Always check to see how long your warranty is.

Claims can be made by your local dealer, if you suspect an issue reach out to them and explain the issue and they'll advise you before booking the bike in. Warranty does not include breakdown cover so consider taking cover out with your insurance as many dealers will not collect a bike that has broken down.
